So You Booked An Engagement Session With Me, Now What Do I Do?
You probably have a million questions after booking an engagement shoot! Questions ranging from what to wear, to picking the best location, it can all be a little overwhelming. But don’t worry, this blog will go over everything you need to know before setting off on an engagement shoot!
Give Me The 411 On Engagement Photos!
Engagement photos are a great way to get comfortable in front of the camera. Most engagement sessions are laid back. It is all about you and your partner and the love you both share. It also is a great opportunity to get to know your wedding photographer. I love capturing couples in their safe space, with each other and as natural as possible. I always claim I am a couples’ favorite third wheel! And it is the truth!
Engagement photos really help me get a feel for a couple and vice versa. Engagement photos recently have gained so much popularity, since they can be versatile and don’t necessarily need to be just engagement photos. These shoots can be used for many things. Some examples include wedding decor, save the date photos, thank you cards, house decor, canvas prints, etc.
What Do I Wear?
It’s all up to you! But I would suggest you take time to think about what you want to wear and not to leave it at the last minute.
Wear something you feel confident in! It should be the essence of who YOU are! Ask yourself what you like and what you don’t like and go from there. You can even pick out your favorite pieces and what you and your fiance love to wear.
Don’t try to go outside your comfort zone! For example, if you don’t like dresses then don’t wear a dress! If he doesn’t like shorts, don’t make him wear shorts! You want to feel the happiest and the most comfortable in the clothes you decide to pick for your shoot.
Be Comfortable!
If you wear something uncomfortable, trust me it will show up in your photos! Depending on the location of your shoot you might be walking, sitting, standing, and maybe a little running and jumping (into each other’s arms of course!) The point is, if you are not comfortable and never walk in heels or a long dress, don’t choose to pick your engagement shoot to test the waters. Wear pieces that will be easy to move in, and please don’t forget shoes! I always recommend bringing an extra pair of comfortable shoes if you plan to wear heels.
Wear Outfits That Compliment Each Other
For most engagement sessions, I always recommend earth tones and neutral colors like tan, cream, white, olive green, gray, and black. These neutral tones look great on anyone and any skin tone. Plus they are super easy to match! If you are more of a color girl, you can totally branch out with more adventurous options, but i would recommend having the color you would like to wear and another outfit in that neutral color. You can definitely add color but I recommend having one of you wear the color and the other a neutral color. At the end of the day, these are YOUR photos so pick what YOU love.
Location Location Location!
Locations are so important when it comes to engagement sessions. Now that these engagement shoots are in high demand and popular right now, the locations of these shoots are super important! Some couples tend to go for a place that has meaning to them. For example, a beach where they might have had their first real date, or the location where he proposed, Could be a hiking trail they both enjoy or somewhere new they haven’t been to before. Whether it is meaningful to you as the couple, or just a location you both find beautiful, it’s good to pick a location as soon as you can, and go over that location with your photographer so you can both plan accordingly. Location also has a big impact on wardrobe as well! Keep in mind your location when choosing your outfit. Make sure they both compliment each other. When picking your outfit keep in mind your location, look at your location and see what will go and complement it. If you go to a location that is cold you might want to take something that’s warm, or if it’s hot you might not want to wear a sweater or long sleeves.
BONUS TIP!
It’s always a good idea to bring another outfit option to your shoot! It can be fit into the 2nd part of your session. If you have two outfits you absolutely love or can’t decide on, bring both and consider doing an outfit change during your shoot. For engagement sessions, I usually tell my couple to do a formal look and a casual look, that way you’ll have two different outfits and two different types of engagement photos at the end of your shoot. When looking at your gallery once it is finished, you’ll be able to see both looks and you can use both versions of the shoots for different things like we talked about earlier. One can be used for your save the dates and another can be used for your thank you cards for example! You can’t go wrong!
With so many weddings and engagement sessions happening in 2022, every photoshoot is different and exciting. From the location, to your confidence, to your outfit, planning things ahead and keeping these key points in mind of a bride or groom to be can help a lot once the time comes to capture your love!
